Local Favorites

When one of your nicknames is “the Good Neighbor City,” you will discover some friendly local haunts.  Monk’s Bar & Grill has served cold beer and hot cheese curds at its Middleton location near Greenway Station since 2011. The Village Green is an old-fashioned tavern in downtown Middleton known for its traditional pub fare, like hamburgers and homemade chili. Also in downtown Middleton is Louisianne’s ETC. This elegant New Orleans-style restaurant welcomes guests with beautiful French Quarter-style décor, sparkling chandeliers, an old European-style wine cellar, and, often, live jazz music. Mid Town Pub is Middleton’s lakeside neighborhood bar and grill, featuring ten draft lines, over 100 bottled beers, more than 200 spirits, and an award-winning fish fry. Delight in Downtown’s Winter Window Stroll

Stroll through downtown Middleton and see windows decorated with adorable, hand-painted gnome winter scenes. Local artist Anne Bamberg intricately hand-painted festive gnomes on 14 windows across downtown Middleton with sweet nods to the stores they adorn — for example, the gnomes are decorating a tree at The National Mustard Museum using pretzels and mustard! You’ll be amazed by the beauty of these charming window paintings.

Birdwatching in Middleton this Fall https://visitmiddleton.com/birdwatching-in-middleton-this-fall/ Tue, 17 Oct 2023 16:51:24 +0000 https://visitmiddleton.com/birdwatching-in-middleton-this-fall/ Middleton is an excellent place for birdwatching, with multiple scenic parks, trails, ponds and conservancy areas. During the fall, hundreds of species of birds pass through Middleton as they migrate south for the winter. Here are a few great places to spot migrating birds.

Pheasant Branch Conservancy Wetlands and Ponds – At the center of Pheasant Branch Conservancy, a 549-acre protected natural area, one can find a creek and multiple ponds and wetlands, which attract birds of many types, particularly wading birds and waterfowl. Beautiful paved nature trails circle the marshes, giving birdwatchers opportunities to see visiting cranes, ducks, herons and geese. Jet off the main path onto boardwalks for a better chance to spot birds waiting in the water or feasting in the fields. The conservancy provides a quiet refuge for bird watchers to enjoy serene beauty. View more information on the birds of Pheasant Branch Conservancy here.

Tiedeman Pond Conservancy Area – Located just a few minutes out of downtown Middleton is Tiedeman Pond Conservancy Area, a 25-acre glacial kettle pond and restored wetland. Take a short walk around the pond’s ADA-accessible boardwalk, and you’re sure to spot various wildlife. On the west side of the pond, there is a wildlife-viewing platform that gives birdwatches an even more fantastic opportunity to spot feathered creatures. When at Tiedman Pond, it is common to encounter blue-winged teal, great blue herons, wood ducks, green herons, mallard ducks, Canada geese, cattle egrets, black-crowned night herons and double-crested cormorants.

Esser Pond – Located near Greenway Station, Esser Pond is another great place to see waterfowl. Despite its proximity to U.S. Highway 12 and a busy shopping area, birds love this open water and wetlands complex. A trail along the northern edge of the wetlands leads to and from downtown Middleton making it an ideal nature escape from the city’s hustle and bustle.

Pheasant Branch Creek Corridor Trail – Streaming through the heart of Middleton is Pheasant Branch Creek, which flows adjacent to a scenic, paved, mixed-use trail. The Pheasant Branch Creek Corridor Trail is 1.4 miles long and can be accessed from multiple points; enter from the west off Parmenter Street, east off Century Avenue or mid-trail at Parisi Park. The woods that line the creek are perfect for seeing migrating songbirds.

Even on days when there aren’t many birds to be found, the fall scenery is ample compensation. This fall, make plans to catch a glimpse of migrating birds and beautiful fall colors in Middleton.

In Wisconsin, most migratory birds will have flown south by the end of November. Here is a great site to check year-round if you are an avid birder! And for tracking seasonal bird traffic, check out this site.

Prost to Oktoberfest! https://visitmiddleton.com/middleton-oktoberfest-celebrations/ Tue, 12 Sep 2023 19:46:58 +0000 https://visitmiddleton.com/?p=24519 Oktoberfest is here and there are so many ways to celebrate in Middleton.

Wisconsin is not only home to the highest percentage of German-Americans, but also the first-ever Oktoberfest celebration in the United States. Because of this, and our state’s love for craft beer, Wisconsinites celebrate Oktoberfest in a big way — including here in Middleton. Whether you have German heritage or not, Sept. 16 is the kickoff of this popular German holiday and here are five ways you can celebrate.

Capital Brewery

A beer and a can of beer on a table.

Fall in Middleton isn’t complete without a stop at Capital Brewery & Bier Garten for a fall-flavored craft beer. You’re in for a treat when ordering Capital Brewery’s Oktoberfest — this brew has won 11 gold and eight silver medals since it was first brewed in 1989. Capital Brewery also offers Autumnal Fire, another sought-after and award-winning craft beer, for a fruitier take on fall. You can enjoy these beers and others on tap in the brewery’s Bier Garten on lovely fall days.

Capital Brewery is also hosting not one but two Oktoberfest events. For an event that offers a bit of exercise on top of celebrating, check out Capital Brewery and the Arthritis Foundation’s Oktoberfest Ride for Arthritis on Saturday, Sept. 16. Choose to bike the 100K, 50K, 25K or 5K family ride. After the ride, cyclists and non-cyclists are invited to celebrate Oktoberfest at Capital Brewery with themed food, drinks, raffles and live music. Learn more here.

For an event solely focused on Oktoberfest festivities, head over to Capital Brewery on Saturday, Sept. 23, for their third annual Oktoberfest. From 1-10 p.m., there will be live music, fun crowd activities and lots of seasonal beer! Learn more here.

Clasen’s European Bakery

Pretzels are sitting on a table in a basket.

You may be remiss if you don’t stop at Clasen’s European Bakery this Oktoberfest season. Clasen’s offers an assortment of old-world style bread, rolls, cakes, pastries, wedding cakes and confections — handcrafted and based on an original 1959 German recipe. Whether looking for a delicious dessert or a handmade Bavarian soft pretzel, this bakery offers an authentic taste of German food that pairs well with just about any Oktoberfest activity.

Craftsman Table and Tap

A pretzel and a glass of beer on a wooden tray.

Throughout September and October, Craftsman Table & Tap will offer Oktoberfest specials, including seasonal beers from both craft and traditional breweries, as well as a jumbo pretzel board swerved with pub cheese dip, stone ground mustard, house sweet pub mustard, and sweet curry pickles. Every Thursday, Oktoberfest beers will be sold for $5.

Longtable Beer Cafe

Throughout the season, Longtable will have a variety of Oktoberfest brews on tap and in their cooler (a wall of almost 300 different beers). Rotating taps will always feature a German and domestic Oktoberfest option, including Hacker-Pschorr, Ayinger, Three Sheeps, Half Acre, Badger State, and New Glarus Brewing.

National Mustard Museum

Kathi german pretzel mix.

If interested in hosting an Oktoberfest celebration, the National Mustard Museum is a great place to get authentic German fixings. And if celebrating Oktoberfest with a sizzling German bratwurst, head to the National Mustard Museum for the perfect topping. This year, the National Mustard Museum has also put together an Oktoberfest gift box filled with Kathi’s German Pretzel Mix, Lowensenf Honey Mustard, Alstertor Dusseldorf Mustard and Handelmaier Bavarian Mustard.

The Free House Pub

In addition to The Free House Pub offering Oktoberfest beer on tap all season long, they are also hosting an OktoBEERfest Party from 11 a.m.-8 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 23. This event will prost to the end of patio season as well as feature German-themed food specials such as brat burgers, German knockwurst on a stick, mustard flights, pretzel bites and hot apple strudel braids. From noon – 4 p.m., a keg will flow and a grill will run on the patio. Celebrate the season with beer, food and fun!

Pack a Picnic in Middleton https://visitmiddleton.com/picnic-in-middleton/ Thu, 06 Jul 2023 17:15:04 +0000 https://visitmiddleton.com/?p=24087 Grab some tasty snacks, order your favorite local takeout, round up a few and head to a scenic outdoor space for a picnic. With more than 30 parks and natural areas, there are plenty of great picnic spots to choose from in Middleton. Plus, multiple events are happening this summer in downtown Middleton’s newly renovated green space, Stone Horse Green, that highly encourage picnicking.

One of the best parts of picnics is how low maintenance they can be. A successful picnic only requires two significant decisions – location and food. Below are a few recommendations for hosting a picnic in Middleton.

Step 1: Pick a Location

Depending on the size of your party, multiple parks in Middleton offer covered shelter spaces that can be reserved up to a year in advance. View a complete list of parks that offer shelter reservations below. More information on shelter reservations can be found here.

From three playgrounds and a free splash pad, to a scenic pond with ADA-accessible piers for fishing, to multiple walking trails and plenty of picnic space, as well as a baseball diamond, tennis courts and soccer fields, this 80-acre park offers something fun for all ages to enjoy. Lakeview Park has multiple rental space options suited for all party types, including a larger pavilion shelter (with open public restrooms) with both indoor and outdoor facilities as well as a small shelter. There is also a gazebo, perfect for a small group to grab some shade and enjoy lunch, and plenty of picnic tables.

This park is located on Middleton’s far north side and offers easy access to Pheasant Branch Conservancy’s trail system. Orchid Heights features excellent outdoor recreation areas, including a playground, baseball diamond, soccer fields, and basketball, softball, volleyball, and tennis courts. There are paved walkways that weave their way throughout the park, including Orchid Heights Conservancy Area and John C. Bock Community Forest. One covered shelter is available to reserve and multiple picnic tables for smaller groups.

Parisi Park is adjacent to the Pheasant Branch Creek Corridor, making it easy to hop on and off the conservancy’s trail system. The park offers a baseball/softball diamond, a playground for children ages 5 to 12, a rain garden and an ADA-accessible, porous asphalt trail that runs through the park. Reservations can be made for the park’s covered shelters. There are also multiple picnic tables available to use at any time.

This 10.2-acre park was named after two generous benefactors who donated their entire estate to allow the park to be built. This park is filled with an abundant amount of outdoor recreation facilities and equipment, including the largest Playworld System® playground as well as three full-size football fields, lacrosse fields, a basketball court, eight pickleball courts, walking paths, picnic areas and a shelter that is available to reserve. The playground, picnic areas, paths, parking and football areas are all ADA-accessible.

Pick a Table

On top of the multiple parks that offer shelters reservations, there are also plenty of picnic tables placed throughout Middleton at the following parks and green spaces:

Downtown

  • Stone Horse Green, 7550 Hubbard Avenue (bistro tables and picnic tables)
  • Terrace Avenue Pavilion, 7733 Terrace Ave (covered picnic tables)
  • Outside Middleton City Hall, 7426 Hubbard Ave (uncovered picnic tables)

Step 2: Pick a Meal

Picking out the right food for a picnic is almost as important as picking out a location. Whether your group prefers takeout from a local restaurant or a large spread from a local grocery store, meat market or farmers market, Middleton has plenty of great food options.

Here are some picnic food options to consider:

Middleton is home to more than 70 restaurants and cafés, many offering great takeout options for a picnic. No matter what side of town you plan to have your picnic, there’s sure to be a restaurant ready to serve up some delicious takeout food, such as Gino’s Italian Deli if you’re in the mood for subs or Longtable Beer Cafe or Poke Bar if you’re hitting up some live music at Stone Horse Green.

From 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Thursday starting early May through the first week in October, the Greenway Station Farmers Market offers farm-fresh produce and local goodies, including veggies, fruits, nuts and honey, cheese, baked goods and more. This market offers various local food options that will make your picnic experience spectacular.

Whether you’re looking to grill out or build a charcuterie board with local meats and cheeses, The UW Provision Meat Market has you covered. The Meat Market is stocked daily with a variety of products, including fresh and frozen meat, cheese products, pasta and potato salads, hamburger and hot dog buns, desserts, chips, soda, alcoholic beverages and condiments—what else could you need for the perfect cookout?

This family-owned deli offers fresh, gourmet and specialty deli and grocery items that are perfect for adding to any picnic—especially if you’re going for an Italian charcuterie board theme. This deli also offers a large selection of made-to-order salads and sandwiches, pre-cooked meatballs and trays of frozen lasagna.

There are also multiple local groceries to stop at in Middleton to pick up your picnic essentials, including Willy Street Co-op and Metro Market; both markets have deli bars and plenty of to-go options including rotisserie chicken, freshly-made salads and sandwiches, and a variety of meats, cheeses and baked breads to build a charcuterie board.

MIDDLETON, Wis. – Enjoy the weather, a walk and a wonderful story while visiting Middleton’s charming downtown.

The Middleton Public Library and Downtown Middleton Business Association have selected their summer StoryWalk®, “Jabari Jumps,” by Gaia Cornwall, starting June 10 and running through Aug. 27. All are invited to venture from stop to stop, while following along with Jabari as he overcomes his fears and makes the big jump.

Middleton has hosted StoryWalks® since 2020, allowing families to follow along with a story, page by page, by visiting 22 stops throughout Downtown Middleton. The stops will have an illustrated poster and can be viewable on a numbered map. Pick up a StoryWalk® map at the Middleton Public Library or download one online at www.downtownmiddleton.com/summerstorywalk.

Some children will even receive their own copy of the book, while supplies last.

“Thanks to the Friends of the Middleton Public Library, we are able to offer a free book to the first 500 kids who stop by the Middleton Public Library and pick up their StoryWalk® map,” said Katie Ganser, head of youth services at Middleton Public Library.

If interested in donating toward the next StoryWalk® in Middleton, reach out to the Middleton Public Library at jsansing@midlibrary.org – not all StoryWalks® can afford to provide free books to children and donations to the program help make this possible.

Middleton is Clean, Green and Serene https://visitmiddleton.com/we-celebrate-earth-day/ Wed, 19 Apr 2023 15:42:10 +0000 https://visitmiddleton.com/?p=23354 From lush outdoor green spaces to passionate local producers and community members, we are so fortunate to be a city that values being green both inside and out. Each year, Earth Day stands as a time to remember the important role we play in protecting, shaping and preserving our planet. In Middleton, we value creating an environment where travelers are welcomed by serene outdoor beauty that is guarded by green and clean sustainability practices.

Here are four reasons why we’re greener:

Middleton loves the outdoors

It’s our lush green spaces, extensive trails and blue waters that make it easy to want to be outdoors. In fact, more than 25 percent of the City of Middleton’s land is dedicated to outdoor, open spaces. Middleton is a place where bikers can spend the day, adventure seekers can traverse through 549 acres of protected conservancy land, water lovers can easily jump into Lake Mendota, golfers can play on an award-winning course with breathtaking view, and so much more.

Breath in the fresh air while visiting Greenway Station—a 41-acre open air shopping center, and spend some time in the completely walkable downtown shopping district of Middleton. Find shopping, restaurants and several stops on the Middleton Outdoor Art Trail or take a trip back in time to experience Middleton’s historic past by embarking on one of the Middleton Area Historical Society‘s walking or landmark tours.

And lastly, after your day of outdoor activity, we highly encourage finding a spot to kick back and enjoy an iced cold beverage and mouth-watering food while listening to live music and/or sitting on a patio.

Middleton.Trails.Bike .2016.PB 1

No need to bring your car, we’ve got you connected

Middleton is also well connected via trail. With more than 27 miles of trails, it’s easy to take it all in without having to use a vehicle. Middleton’s community trails lead to playgrounds, recreation areas and pavilions, as well as nearby places to eat and shop. Explore an updated map of Middleton’s trails here.

If you do travel to Middleton with a vehicle, there are several electric vehicle public charging stations. Find a charging station that works for you:

  • Downtown: 7428 Terrace Ave and 7428 Terrace Ave
  • Greenway Station: 1611 Aspen Commons
  • East Middleton: 6825 University Ave
  • North Middleton: 8000 Airport Rd, 7185 High Rd and 6829 Co Rd K

We emphasize local produce

On top of our extensive food scene of more than 70-plus restaurants, we love eating food that is sourced locally. Whether that be by picking up produce at the Greenway Station Farmers Market for a homemade meal, or stopping at a local restaurant that features menu items made with locally-sourced ingredients, Middleton offers farm-fresh goodness.

Our community is committed

Much of Middleton’s ability to be a green city can be contributed to our community members strong dedication and desire to preserve and protect the environment and the city’s natural beauty. The City of Middleton has pledged to establish goals to meet 100% of their energy needs with renewable energy by 2040 and 100 percent of community-wide energy needs with renewable energy by 2050. From the leadership of the City of Middleton’s Sustainability Committee, to the Morey Field five-megawatt solar project that hosts 1.5 megawatts of solar power for the City of Middleton and the Middleton-Cross Plains Area School District, to Middleton’s Municipal Airpot, Morey Field, offering a fully unleaded aviation fuel option, all the way to local businesses and individual community members who are passionate about supporting climate change, Middleton is leading the way on becoming a greener city.

Spring StoryWalk®: ‘The Cars and Trucks Book’ https://visitmiddleton.com/spring-storywalk-2023/ Tue, 21 Mar 2023 18:00:11 +0000 https://visitmiddleton.com/?p=21692 Middleton’s Spring StoryWalk® takes on a fun exploration of all things cars and trucks

StoryWalk® adventures are back in Downtown Middleton.

Middleton Public Library and Downtown Middleton Business Association are teaming up once again to bring stories to life through an outdoor, interactive storytelling experience.

This spring’s StoryWalk® will feature the book “The Cars and Trucks Book,” by Todd Parr, which brings his trademark bright colors and bold lines in this book about cars, trucks, and occasionally buses.  This is Middleton’s ninth StoryWalk® and will take place March 24 through May 28.

“We wanted to find a way to include children and families in the excitement downtown with the new construction of Stone Horse Green — the downtown community space that is being built on Hubbard Avenue,” said Andrea Van Nest, DMBA president and co-owner of the Longtable Beer Cafe. “Using construction as our StoryWalk® theme and pairing it with a Hard Hat Club sounded like the perfect way to reach kids who love construction trucks and machinery and generate some excitement for the project.”

What is a StoryWalk®?

A StoryWalk® allows families to follow the book, page by page, by visiting 26 stops throughout Downtown Middleton. The stops will have an illustrated poster and can be viewable on a numbered map.

Pick up a StoryWalk® map at the Middleton Public Library or download one online here. A free copy of the book will be available to the first 500 kids.

And this spring, some children will even receive their own copy of the book.

“Thanks to the Friends of the Middleton Public Library, we are able to offer a free book to the first 500 kids who stop by the Middleton Public Library and pick up their StoryWalk® map,” said Katie Ganser, head of youth services at Middleton Public Library.

Want to support the library’s next StoryWalk®?

If interested in donating to the next StoryWalk®’s activities and book giveaways, please reach out to the Middleton Public Library at jsansing@midlibrary.org. Not all StoryWalks® can afford to provide free books to children; donations to the program help make this possible.

StoryWalk® is presented by Middleton Public Library and Downtown Middleton Business Association. The StoryWalk® Project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, Vt., and developed in collaboration with the Kellogg-Hubbard Library.

Insta-worthy Holiday Spots https://visitmiddleton.com/insta-worthy-holiday-spots/ Mon, 19 Dec 2022 22:22:16 +0000 https://visitmiddleton.com/?p=21399 Still looking for the perfect holiday card moment?

Here are a few spots that might inspire a fun seasonal card idea:

a large gingerbread house decorated with icing and decorations

Clasen’s European Bakery — The annual child-size gingerbread house is a must-see. Even if you don’t have kids, this cookie structure is amazing. The entire exterior is baked and decorated by Clasen employees and it makes an adorable photo op.

Greenway Station Tree — Mind the traffic and stay within the sidewalk area and this two-story tree makes an amazing backdrop. One of the best locations for a photo is actually on the main sidewalks running parallel.

Middleton Visitor Center — The historic wagon at the visitor center was just repainted last month and is all decked out with holiday spirit. Be mindful of the swag (held together with zip ties and hope), we at the visitor center welcome families to use the depot as a beautiful backdrop for photos. Check inside, as well, and see the tree and hanging four-foot wreath. The staff tried to maintain a Victorian-like style throughout the visitors center.

Stone Horse Green — the newly dedicated Stone Horse Green in the heart of downtown Middleton has a new light display. The stage is lit up with a fireplace and warm message for all to see.

Your Middleton fall color guide https://visitmiddleton.com/your-middleton-fall-color-guide/ Mon, 10 Oct 2022 20:00:00 +0000 https://visitmiddleton.com/your-middleton-fall-color-guide/

Days filled with crisp, cool weather and beautiful orange and yellow scenery are right around the corner. Home to scenic parks and natural areas, an excellent trail system and plenty of incredible outdoor recreation options, Middleton offers the perfect fall getaway. Here’s a guide to help you find and enjoy the best fall color this season.

How to catch fall color

In southern Wisconsin, fall color usually peaks mid-to-late October, so check regularly for the latest conditions. Click on the link on this page or here for the Fall Color Report.

Fall color hotspots

Middleton is home to beautiful parks and trails that are perfect places to take in southern Wisconsin’s fall color show. Pheasant Branch Conservancy is a 549-acre protected area with a rich mix of woodlands, restored prairie and marshlands. The trails here are beautifully maintained for biking and hiking; most are ADA-accessible and allow you to bring along your four-legged family members (check the signage beforehand and keep all dogs on a leash, please!). Bird-watchers, runners and photographers also enjoy the conservancy. Several parking lots surrounding the park make accessibility to the trails easy.

Tiedeman Pond Conservancy Area is the ultimate spot to take in the beauty of fall. Here, you’ll find a restored wetland and the 25-acre Tiedeman’s pond, a welcoming destination for birds in fall. A 1-mile peaceful, scenic trail wraps around the pond and includes boardwalk sections.

Here are some other fall color hotspots in and around Middleton:

Plan an outdoor picnic

Fall can bring some lovely days to Middleton. Grab some delicious food and head to one of the city’s many parks, visit the expansive Pheasant Branch Conservancy, or find a picnic table at Stone Horse Green or the Terrace Avenue Pavilion downtown. Check out more information on packing a picnic in Middleton here.

Bike around Middleton

Enjoy Middleton’s nationally-recognized community trail system. Whether you head out on a trail to Madison, Devil’s Lake or just through the conservancy and the city, you’ll glide through canopies of fantastic foliage. The Middleton Bike Park offers five miles of single-track trails with great scenic views. A new paved pump track is scheduled to open in late 2023.

Play a round at Pleasant View Golf Course

Here, you’ll find a stunning panoramic view of Madison, with the chance to check out 27 holes of championship golf across three nine-hole courses, plus a par-3, executive 9-hole course. Lined with gorgeous trees, the fall foliage is fabulous here.

Relax on the water

Lake Mendota is the perfect place to take in 360-degree views of fall colors. At sunrise or sunset, marvel at the sky’s hues of orange and pink as they reflect off the water as you glide through in your kayak, canoe or boat. Residents and visitors can drop their boats into the water at Marshall Park or rent kayaks, stand-up paddle boards, mega paddle boards, tandem kayaks, canoes, and pontoon boats from Marshall Boats, open 11 a.m.-7 p.m., Saturday and Sunday in September.

Two people stand up paddle boarding in the water at sunset.
Find a place to play

Middleton’s fall colors are also a good backdrop for your outdoor activities. Bring your pup for some playtime at MRD Dog Exercise Area, let the kids burn off some energy at one of Middleton’s more than 30 parks and natural areas, or cast a fishing rod from Lakeview Park’s ADA-accessible pier; all fishing must be catch and release. There’s a place for everyone in the family to enjoy fall in Middleton; find more recreation options here.

Lodging

Thinking of staying over? Middleton has nine hotels, from pet-friendly to those with pools and kitchenettes. Check out more here.
